Thinking of taking an MCSE? If the answer’s ‘yes’, there’s a good chance that you’re probably in 1 of 2 situations: You’re someone with a certain amount of knowledge and you’d like to consolidate your skill-set with the MCSE qualification. In contrast you could be completely new to the computer workplace, but it’s apparent to you there’s a huge demand for certified networking professionals.

We’d recommend you check that your provider is educating you on the latest Microsoft version. A number of trainees become very demoralised when it turns out they have been studying for an outdated MCSE program which now needs updating. Don’t be pushed into a computer course without the right advice. Look for a training company that will ensure you are on an appropriate training track for your needs.

Your training program should always include the latest Microsoft (or relevant organisation’s) accredited exam simulation and preparation packages. Make sure that the practice exams haven’t just got questions from the right areas, but also asking them in the way that the actual final exam will formulate them. It really messes up trainees if they’re met with completely different formats and phraseologies. Always ask for testing modules in order to test your knowledge along the way. Practice exams help to build your confidence – then you won’t be quite so nervous at the actual exam.

So many training providers are all about the certification, and completely avoid what it’s all actually about – which will always be getting the job or career you want. Always start with the end in mind – don’t make the vehicle more important than the destination. It’s not unheard of, in many cases, to thoroughly enjoy one year of training but end up spending 10 or 20 years in something completely unrewarding, entirely because you stumbled into it without the correct level of soul-searching when it was needed – at the start.

Prioritise understanding the expectations of your industry. What particular certifications they’ll want you to gain and how you’ll go about getting some commercial experience. It’s definitely worth spending time considering how far you wish to build your skill-set as it will present a very specific set of exams. It’s good advice for all students to speak to an experienced industry advisor before they embark on a training course. This helps to ensure it contains the commercially required skills for that career path.

Ensure all your qualifications are commercially valid and current – don’t bother with courses which lead to some in-house certificate (which is as useless as if you’d printed it yourself). Only nationally recognised certification from the likes of Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA and Cisco will mean anything to employers.

We need to make this very clear: You have to get round-the-clock 24×7 instructor support. We can tell you that you’ll strongly regret it if you don’t. You’ll be waiting ages for an answer with email based support, and telephone support is usually to a call-centre who will make some notes and then email an advisor – who will call back over the next day or so (assuming you’re there), at a time suitable for them. This is all next to useless if you’re sitting there confused over an issue and only have a specific time you can study.

The very best training providers have many support offices active in different time-zones. An online system provides an interactive interface to seamlessly link them all, no matter what time you login, help is at hand, avoiding all the delays and problems. Don’t under any circumstances take less than this. Direct-access round-the-clock support is the only way to go for technical study. Perhaps you don’t intend to study during the evenings; but for most of us, we’re working at the time when most support is available.

An important area that is sometimes not even considered by potential students weighing up a particular programme is ‘training segmentation’. This basically means the method used to break up the program for delivery to you, which vastly changes where you end up. By and large, you will purchase a course that takes between and 1 and 3 years and receive a module at a time. It seems to make sense on one level, but consider these issues: Maybe the order of study insisted on by the company won’t suit you. It may be difficult to get through all the elements within their timetable?

The ideal circumstances are to get all the learning modules packed off to you immediately; the complete package! This prevents any future issues from rising that will affect your ability to finish.

With an abundance of IT and computer courses on offer these days, it’s best to take advice from a company that can help you decide on the right one for you. Reputable organisations will talk thoroughly through the different job roles that could be right for you, before offering you a training program that can take you where you want to go. Why not try Microsoft User Skills packages, or take a career track and specialise. Plain speaking courses will help you achieve the goals you set yourself.

By taking advantage of the latest training methods and getting rid of wasteful procedures, there’s a new style of course provider supplying a better brand of teaching and assistance for very competitive prices.

Many training providers are still using a now out-dated method of training – classroom days. Often sold as a benefit, if you talk to a student who has had to attend a few, don’t be surprised to be lectured on several if not all of these:

* Many round journeys – quite often hundreds of miles at a time.

* Asking for frequent time off work – typical companies provide weekday availability and group several days in a chunk. This can be hard for a lot of working people, especially if travelling time is added into the mix.

* Lost holiday days – a lot of workers are given only twenty days of leave annually. If you give up at least half to your study classes, vacation time is going to be quite short for students and their families.

* Classes can end up too big.

* Tension can run high in many classes where students want to progress at their own pace.

* The cost of travel – arranging transport backwards and forwards to the training premises and of course accommodation over-night can cost a lot every time you have to go. With only 5-10 workshops at a cost of 35 pounds for an over-night room, plus a petrol cost of 40 pounds and 15 pounds for food, that becomes a minimum of four to nine hundred pounds of extra costs to cover.

* It’s important to maintain privacy. We shouldn’t risk throwing away any advancement that we’re owed while we retrain.

* Most of us feel awkward about asking questions in a room full of other trainees – because none of us wants to look like we don’t understand.

* For those of us who need to occasionally live away for part of the week, imagine the increased difficulty in making the required workshops, when time is at a premium.

The perfect situation is to watch a videoed workshop – providing direct instruction whenever it’s convenient for you. Training can take place wherever it suits you. Got a laptop?… Then why not catch some sun in your garden while you learn. If any problem raises its head then make use of the 24×7 support. Note-taking is a thing of the past – all the lessons are prepared and laid out for you – ready to go. Any time you want to repeat something, just do it. Could it be more straightforward: You avoid travelling and wasting time and money; plus you get a more stress-free study atmosphere.

Make sure that all your qualifications are what employers want – don’t even consider studies which end up with a useless in-house certificate or plaque. If your certification doesn’t come from a company like Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe, then you’ll probably find it will be commercially useless – because no-one will recognise it.

The way a programme is physically sent to you is often missed by many students. How many stages do they break the program into? What is the specific order and how fast does each element come? Individual deliveries for each training module one piece at a time, as you pass each exam is the usual method of releasing your program. While sounding logical, you might like to consider this: What could you expect if you didn’t actually complete each section at the speed they required? Often the prescribed exam order won’t fit you as well as another different route may.

For the perfect solution, you want everything at the start – so you’ll have them all to come back to in the future – as and when you want. This allows a variation in the order that you complete your exams if another more intuitive route presents itself.

by Jason Kendall

In today’s high speed society, support workers who are able to mend PC’s and networks, and offer constant help to users, are essential in all areas of the business environment. Because of the multifaceted levels of technology, greater numbers of competent professionals are required to specialise in the smooth operation of functions we’ve come to rely on.

Trainees looking at this market can be very practical by nature, and won’t enjoy sitting at a desk in class, and slogging through piles of books. If you identify with this, try the newer style of interactive study, where everything is presented via full motion video. Learning psychology studies show that much more of what we learn in remembered when we receive multi-sensorial input, and we get physically involved with the study process.

Locate a program where you’ll receive a selection of DVD-ROM’s – you’ll begin by watching videos of instructors demonstrating the skills, with the facility to use virtual lab’s to practice your new skills. Every company that you look at should willingly take you through a few samples of the materials provided for study. You’re looking for evidence of tutorial videos and demonstrations and interactive areas to practice in.

Often, companies will only use just online versions of their training packages; and although this is okay the majority of the time, imagine the problems if you lose your internet access or you get intermittent problems and speed issues. A safer solution is the provision of CD and DVD ROM materials which don’t suffer from these broadband issues.

Your training program should always include the most up to date Microsoft (or relevant organisation’s) authorised simulation materials and exam preparation packages. Sometimes people can get confused by practising exam questions that aren’t recognised by official boards. Often, the question formats and phraseology is unfamiliar and it’s vital that you know this. A way to build self-confidence is if you test whether you’re learning enough through tests and mock ups of exams before you take the real deal.

Make sure you don’t get caught-up, as many people do, on the certification itself. Training for training’s sake is generally pointless; you’re training to become commercially employable. Focus on the end-goal. It’s unfortunate, but a great many students begin programs that seem marvellous in the sales literature, but which delivers a career that doesn’t fulfil at all. Talk to many college graduates and you’ll see where we’re coming from.

Take time to understand how you feel about career progression and earning potential, and how ambitious you are. You should understand what industry expects from you, what qualifications are required and in what way you can develop commercial experience. All students are advised to speak with a skilled professional before deciding on their training course. This is essential to ensure it contains the commercially required skills for the chosen career path.

Starting from the viewpoint that we need to home-in on the job we want to do first and foremost, before we’re able to weigh up what educational program fulfils our needs, how do we know the correct route? How likely is it for us to understand the day-to-day realities of any IT job when we’ve never done it? Most likely we have never met anyone who performs the role either. Consideration of these issues is most definitely required if you need to dig down the right answers:

* Your hobbies and interests – often these point towards what possibilities will provide a happy working life.

* Do you hope to pull off a closely held dream – for instance, working from home someday?

* What priority do you place on salary vs job satisfaction?

* Considering all that Information Technology encapsulates, it’s obvious you’ll need to be able to absorb how they differ.

* You’ll also need to think hard about the level of commitment that you will set aside for the accreditation program.

The best way to avoid the confusing industry jargon, and uncover the most viable option for your success, have a good talk with an industry-experienced advisor; someone who will cover the commercial realities and truth while explaining all the qualifications.

One of the most important things to insist on has to be proper direct-access 24×7 support via dedicated instructors and mentors. So many companies we come across only seem to want to help while they’re in the office (9am till 6pm, Monday till Friday usually) and nothing at the weekends. Be wary of any training providers that use ‘out-of-hours’ messaging systems – where an advisor will call back during standard office hours. This is useless when you’re stuck and need help now.

Keep your eyes open for providers that incorporate three or four individual support centres around the globe in several time-zones. Each one should be integrated to offer a simple interface and also 24 hours-a-day access, when you need it, without any problems. Don’t ever make the mistake of taking second best where support is concerned. The majority of would-be IT professionals that drop-out or fail, would have had a different experience if they’d got the right support package in the first place.

by Jason Kendall

The CompTIA A+ course comprises of 4 specialised sectors – the requirement is exam passes in 2 specialities to be considered A+ competent. This is why, most colleges only offer two of the training options. We think this is selling you short – certainly you’ll have the qualification, but knowledge of every section will give you greater confidence in industry, where knowledge of all four will be necessary. That’s the reason why you deserve training in all 4 specialities.

A+ computer training courses cover fault-finding and diagnostics – both remote access and hands-on, in addition to building, fixing, repairing and working in antistatic conditions. You may also want to think about doing Network+ as you can then also work with networks, which is where the bigger salaries are.

Usually, your normal student doesn’t know where to start with IT, or even which area to focus their retraining program on. Since without any solid background in the IT industry, how can most of us be expected to understand what anyone doing a particular job actually does? To get through to the essence of this, a discussion is necessary, covering several definitive areas:

* The kind of individual you are – the tasks that you enjoy, and don’t forget – what don’t you like doing.

* For what reasons you’re moving into computing – it could be you’re looking to overcome a long-held goal such as working for yourself maybe.

* Your earning needs you may have?

* There are many ways to train in Information Technology – you’ll need to gain some background information on what differentiates them.

* It makes sense to understand the differences across the myriad of training options.

To be honest, your only option to investigate these matters is via a conversation with an advisor or professional that understands the IT industry (and chiefly the commercial requirements.)

One interesting way that training providers make more money is through up-front charges for exams and presenting it as a guarantee for your exams. It looks like a good deal, but let’s just examine it more closely:

You’re paying for it by some means. One thing’s for sure – it isn’t free – they’ve just worked it into the package price. Qualifying on the first ‘go’ is what everyone wants to do. Entering examinations one at a time and paying for them just before taking them makes it far more likely you’ll pass first time – you prepare appropriately and are mindful of the investment you’ve made.

Do the examinations somewhere close to home and find the best deal for you at the time. Is there a good reason to pay interest on a bigger loan than is necessary because you’ve paid early for examination fees when there was no need to? A lot of profit is secured by training companies charging all their exam fees up-front – and hoping either that you won’t take them, or it will be a long time before you do. In addition to this, you should consider what an ‘exam guarantee’ really means. Many training companies will not pay again for an exam until you have demonstrated conclusively that you won’t fail again.

Exam fees averaged approximately 112 pounds twelve months or so ago through Prometric or VUE centres around the United Kingdom. So don’t be talked into shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds more to get ‘Exam Guarantees’, when common sense dictates that what’s really needed is a commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools.

Those that are drawn to this type of work are often very practical, and don’t always take well to classrooms, and poring through books and manuals. If you identify with this, go for more modern interactive training, with on-screen demonstrations and labs. Research has always verified that getting into our studies physically, is proven to produce longer-lasting and deeper memory retention.

Interactive audio-visual materials involving demonstration and virtual lab’s will beat books every time. And you’ll find them fun and interesting. It would be silly not to view some of the typical study materials provided before you hand over your cheque. You should expect instructor-led video demonstrations and a variety of audio-visual and interactive sections.

It’s folly to go for purely on-line training. With highly variable reliability and quality from the ISP (internet service provider) market, make sure you get CD or DVD ROM based materials.

When did you last consider your job security? Typically, this only rears its head when we experience a knock-back. But really, the lesson often learned too late is that job security simply doesn’t exist anymore, for most of us. It’s possible though to hit upon security at the market sector level, by looking for high demand areas, together with a shortage of skilled staff.

The computing Industry skills shortfall throughout the United Kingdom falls in at approx twenty six percent, as reported by the latest e-Skills analysis. It follows then that for each four job positions that exist in the computer industry, employers can only source trained staff for three of the four. This single notion alone clearly demonstrates why the country needs considerably more workers to get trained and enter the IT industry. Actually, acquiring professional IT skills as you progress through the years to come is probably the safest career move you’ll ever make.

Students will sometimes miss checking on a painfully important area – the way the company actually breaks down and delivers the courseware sections, and into what particular chunks. Delivery by courier of each element one stage at a time, as you pass each exam is the typical way that your program will arrive. While seeming sensible, you must understand the following: How would they react if you didn’t complete each and every exam at the proposed pace? Often the staged order doesn’t work as well as some other order of studying might.

To be straight, the perfect answer is to have their ideal ‘order’ of training laid out, but get everything up-front. Everything is then in your possession if you don’t manage to finish at their required pace.

Nice One! Hitting upon this feature suggests you’re thinking about your future, and if you’re considering retraining that means you’ve taken it further than almost everybody else. Did you know that a small minority of us consider ourselves contented at work – yet most will take no corrective action. We implore you to be different and make a start – you have the rest of your life to enjoy it.

On the subject of training, it’s essential to first define your requirements from the career you’re looking to get into. It’s important to discover if a new career would suit you better before your energies are focused on changing the direction of your life. Prudence suggests looking at the big picture first, to make an informed decision:

* Are you hoping to be involved with others in the workplace? Would you prefer to work with a small team or with many new people? Maybe working on your own with your own methodology would give you pleasure?

* Building and Banking are a little shaky today, so which sector would give you the most options?

* Once you’ve qualified, are you hoping your new skills will give you the ability to take you through to retirement?

* Do you have the assurance that the training program you’ve chosen is commercially viable, and will provide the facility to be employed up to the time you want to stop?

It’s important that your number one choice is the IT sector – it’s well known that it’s on the grow. It’s not full of geeky individuals gazing at their PC’s all day – we know those roles do exist, but most jobs are done by people like you and me who earn considerably more than most.

One crafty way that training companies make more money is by adding exam fees upfront to the cost of a course and then including an ‘Exam Guarantee’. It looks like a good deal, but let’s just examine it more closely:

Patently it’s not free – you are paying for it – the price has simply been included in the whole thing. It’s well known in the industry that when trainees fund each progressive exam, one at a time, they’ll be in a better position to qualify each time – because they’re aware of their investment in themselves and therefore will put more effort into their preparation.

Go for the best offer you can find when you take the exam, and hang on to your cash. You’ll then be able to select where you do the examinations – meaning you can choose a local testing centre. A lot of current training providers secure huge profits because they’re getting paid for exam fees early then hoping that you won’t take them all. Remember, in the majority of cases of ‘exam guarantees’ – they control when and how often you are allowed to do a re-take. Subsequent exam attempts are only authorised at the company’s say so.

With the average price of Pro-metric and VUE examinations coming in at approximately 112 pounds in Great Britain, it’s common sense to fund them one by one. It’s not in the student’s interests to fork out hundreds or thousands of pounds for exams when enrolling on a course. A commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools are actually the key to your success.

Ignore the typical salesperson who pushes one particular program without a decent chat to better understand your current abilities and also your level of experience. Always check they have access to a expansive stable of training programs so they’re able to give you an appropriate solution. With a strong background, or maybe some work-based experience (some certifications gained previously perhaps?) then it’s more than likely your starting point will be very different from someone with no background whatsoever. Starting with a user skills module first may be the ideal way to start into your computer training, but really depends on your level of familiarity with computers.

So, why is it better to gain commercially accredited qualifications as opposed to the usual academic qualifications taught at schools, colleges or universities? Corporate based study (in industry terminology) is far more specialised and product-specific. The IT sector has realised that such specialised knowledge is necessary to handle a technically advancing commercial environment. CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA are the dominant players. Higher education courses, for instance, often get bogged down in too much loosely associated study – with much too broad a syllabus. Students are then held back from understanding the specific essentials in enough depth.

In simple terms: Accredited IT qualifications provide exactly what an employer needs – the title says it all: as an example – I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Planning and Maintaining a Windows 2003 Infrastructure’. So companies can identify just what their needs are and what certifications will be suitable to deal with those needs.

There are colossal changes about to hit technology as we approach the second decade of the 21st century – and it becomes more and more thrilling each day. There are people who believe that the technological revolution we’ve been going through is lowering its pace. This couldn’t be more wrong. There are huge changes to come, and most especially the internet will be the most effective tool in our lives.

Let’s not forget that typical remuneration in IT across the UK is noticeably greater than remuneration packages in other industries, therefore you’ll be in a good position to receive much more as an IT specialist, than you’d expect to earn elsewhere. Due to the technological sector increasing year on year, it’s looking good that the requirement for qualified professionals will continue to boom for a good while yet.

Often, trainers provide mainly work-books and reference manuals. It’s not a very interesting way to learn and not really conducive to remembering. If we’re able to get all of our senses involved in our learning, then the results are usually dramatically better.

Modern training can now be done at home via interactive discs. Instructor-led tutorials will mean you’ll absorb the modules, one by one, via the demonstrations and explanations. Knowledge can then be tested by practicing and interacting with the software. Any company that you’re considering must be able to demonstrate a few samples of their courseware. Expect video tutorials, instructor led classes and many interactive sections.

It is generally unwise to choose training that is only available online. Connection quality and reliability varies hugely across all internet service providers, you should always obtain disc based courseware (On CD or DVD).

The Microsoft MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) course is perfect for men and women looking to get into supporting networks. Whether you want to get going or already have knowledge but want to formalise that with an acknowledged certification, it’s possible to achieve your goals with the right training. For someone just entering the world of computers, it could be appropriate to pick up some skills ahead of getting involved in the first of the four Microsoft Certified Professional exams (MCP’s) that are required to achieve an MCSA. Look for a company that can create a bespoke package to suit you – one who will guide you to guarantee that you make the right choices.

We’re often asked why traditional academic studies are being replaced by more commercially accredited qualifications? As demand increases for knowledge about more and more complex technology, industry has been required to move to the specialised training only available through the vendors themselves – for example companies such as CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA. This often comes in at a fraction of the cost and time. The training is effectively done by focusing on the particular skills that are needed (along with a proportionate degree of related knowledge,) as opposed to going into the heightened depths of background ‘extras’ that computer Science Degrees can get bogged down in – to pad out the syllabus.

If an employer understands what they’re looking for, then all they have to do is advertise for a person with the appropriate exam numbers. Syllabuses are set to exacting standards and don’t change between schools (in the way that degree courses can).

Frequently, a normal IT hopeful really has no clue in what direction to head in the IT industry, or even what area is worth considering for retraining. Therefore, if you’ve got no background in IT in the workplace, what chance is there for you to know what a particular IT employee actually does day-to-day? And of course decide on which certification program is the most likely for ultimate success. To get through to the essence of this, there should be a discussion of a number of core topics:

* The type of personality you have plus what interests you – what working tasks please or frustrate you.

* Why it seems right starting in IT – is it to achieve a particular goal such as firing your boss and working for yourself maybe.

* The income requirements you may have?

* Learning what the main career roles and sectors are – plus how they’re different to each other.

* The time and energy you will set aside for the training program.

The best way to avoid the barrage of jargon, and reveal the best route for you, have an informal meeting with an industry-experienced advisor; a person that understands the commercial reality whilst covering the certifications.

A typical blunder that students everywhere can make is to concentrate on the course itself, instead of focusing on the end result they want to achieve. Training academies are stacked to the hilt with unaware students who chose a course based on what sounded good – in place of something that could gain them their end-goal of a job they enjoyed. You may train for one year and then end up doing a job for a lifetime. Don’t make the mistake of taking what may be an ‘interesting’ course and then spend decades in something you don’t even enjoy!

It’s essential to keep your focus on what it is you’re trying to achieve, and create a learning-plan from that – avoid getting them back-to-front. Stay on target – making sure you’re training for an end-result that will keep you happy for many years. It’s worth seeking help from an advisor who knows the commercial realities of the sector you’ve chosen, and will be able to provide ‘A day in the life of’ explanation of the job being considered. These things are incredibly important because you obviously have to know if you’re going down the right road.

A study programme must provide a properly recognised accreditation at the finale – and not some unimportant ‘in-house’ printed certificate to hang in your hallway. From an employer’s viewpoint, only the major heavyweights such as Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco or CompTIA (as an example) give enough bang for your buck. Nothing else hits the mark.

A useful feature that many training companies provide is a Job Placement Assistance program. It’s intention is to assist your search for your first position. It can happen though that too much is made of this feature, for it’s really not that difficult for a well trained and motivated person to secure a job in the IT industry – as employers are keen to find appropriately skilled employees.

However, what is relevant is to have CV and Interview advice and support though; also we would encourage everybody to work on polishing up their CV as soon as training commences – don’t wait till you’ve finished your exams. It’s possible that you won’t have even passed your first exam when you land your first junior support position; although this can’t and won’t happen unless you’ve posted your CV on job sites. You’ll normally experience better results from a specialised and independent local recruitment service than you’ll get from a training provider’s national service, because they will understand the local industry and employment needs.

In a nutshell, as long as you focus the same level of energy into getting your first job as into studying, you’re not going to hit many challenges. A number of students inexplicably put hundreds of hours into their training and studies and then call a halt once qualified and appear to be under the impression that jobs will come to them.

by Jason Kendall

Does an MCSE appeal to you? If the answer’s ‘yes’, there’s a good chance that you’re in one of two situations: You’re someone with a certain amount of knowledge and you should formalise your skills with an MCSE. Instead this could be your first step into commercial IT, but it’s apparent to you that there’s a growing demand for men and women who are commercially qualified.

As you try to find out more, you will notice colleges that compromise their offerings by failing to provide the latest version from Microsoft. Steer clear of training companies like these as it will create challenges for you with the present exams. If you’re learning from an old version, it will be hard to pass. Computer training companies must be devoted to discovering the ultimate program for their trainees. Directing study is as much about helping people to work out where to go, as it is giving them help to reach their destination.

Most of us would love to think that our jobs will always be secure and the future is protected, but the growing reality for most sectors in England currently is that security just isn’t there anymore. Whereas a fast growing sector, where there just aren’t enough staff to go round (because of an enormous shortage of properly qualified professionals), creates the conditions for lasting job security.

Taking the computer market as an example, the most recent e-Skills investigation showed major skills shortages in the UK of around 26 percent. To put it another way, this highlights that Great Britain only has 3 trained people for every 4 jobs in existence at the moment. Fully skilled and commercially accredited new staff are accordingly at a resounding premium, and in all likelihood it will stay that way for many years to come. For sure, now really is a critical time to train for Information Technology (IT).

How can we reach a good choice then? With such prospects, we’ll need to know where to be looking – and what to be looking for.

With so much choice, is it any wonder that nearly all career changers have no idea which career they will follow. Because in the absence of any previous experience in computing, how could any of us know what anyone doing a particular job actually does? Achieving a well-informed decision can only grow from a detailed investigation across many changing areas:

* What nature of individual you are – what kind of jobs you really enjoy, and on the other side of the coin – what makes you unhappy.

* For what reasons you’re getting involved with computing – it could be you’re looking to overcome a long-held goal such as being self-employed for instance.

* Is your income higher on your priority-list than other requirements.

* Many students don’t properly consider the work needed to gain all the necessary accreditation.

* It’s wise to spend some time thinking about the amount of time and effort you’ll put into your education.

In all honesty, your only option to research these areas tends to be through a good talk with an advisor who understands computing (as well as the commercial needs.)

People attracted to this sort of work are usually quite practically-minded, and don’t really enjoy classrooms, and struggling through thick study-volumes. If this could be you, try the newer style of interactive study, where you can learn everything on-screen. Memory is vastly improved with an involvement of all our senses – this has been an accepted fact in expert circles for many years.

The latest audio-visual interactive programs utilising video demo’s and practice lab’s will forever turn you away from traditional book study. And you’ll find them fun and interesting. It would be silly not to view some of the typical study materials provided before you make your decision. Always insist on instructor demonstrations, video tutorials and a variety of audio-visual and interactive sections.

You should avoid purely online training. Physical CD or DVD ROM materials are preferable where offered, as you need to be able to use them whenever it’s convenient for you – it’s not wise to be held hostage to a quality and continuous internet connection.

An area that’s often missed by potential students considering a training program is that of ‘training segmentation’. Essentially, this is the way the course is divided up for timed release to you, which can make a dramatic difference to what you end up with. Students often think it makes sense (with most training taking 1-3 years for a full commercial certification,) for a training company to release the training stage by stage, as you achieve each exam pass. But: Maybe the order of study insisted on by the company won’t suit you. What if you find it hard to complete all the elements at the speed required?

The very best situation would see you getting all the learning modules couriered to your address right at the beginning; the complete package! This prevents any future issues from rising that will affect your capacity to get everything done.

Of all the important things to consider, one of the most essential is always 24×7 round-the-clock support with expert mentors and instructors. Far too often we see trainers who only provide support to you inside of office hours (typically 9am-6pm) and sometimes a little earlier or later (but not weekends usually). Beware of institutions that use messaging services ‘out-of-hours’ – where an advisor will call back during typical office hours. This is no use if you’re stuck and want support there and then.

It’s possible to find the very best companies who give students online direct access support 24×7 – including evenings, nights and weekends. If you fail to get yourself online 24×7 support, you’ll regret it. You might not want to use the service in the middle of the night, but consider weekends, early mornings or even late evenings at some point.

Look at the points below carefully if you’ve been persuaded that that over-used sales technique about a guarantee for your exam looks like a reason to buy:

It’s very clear we’re ultimately paying for it – obviously it has already been included in the overall figure from the college. It’s certainly not free (it’s just marketing companies think we’ll fall for anything they say!) Passing first time is everyone’s goal. Entering examinations in order and paying for them just before taking them puts you in a much stronger position to qualify at the first attempt – you put the effort in and are aware of the costs involved.

Shouldn’t you be looking to hold on to your money and pay for the exam at the appropriate time, not to pay the fees marked up by a training course provider, and to do it locally – instead of miles away at the college’s beck and call? Buying a course that includes payments for examination fees (which also includes interest if you’ve taken out a loan) is insane. Resist being talked into filling the training company’s account with your money just to give them more interest! A lot bank on the fact that you will never make it to exams – so they get to keep the extra funds. The majority of organisations will insist that you take mock exams first and not allow you to re-take an exam until you have proved to them you have a good chance of passing – so an ‘Exam Guarantee’ comes with many clauses in reality.

Average exam fees were approximately 112 pounds in the last 12 months via VUE or Pro-metric centres in the UK. So why pay hundreds or thousands of pounds extra to get ‘Exam Guarantees’, when it’s no secret that what’s really needed is a commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools.

Be on the lookout that any exams you’re studying for will be recognised by employers and are up-to-date. The ‘in-house’ certifications provided by many companies are not normally useful in gaining employment. Unless the accreditation comes from a conglomerate such as Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco or CompTIA, then chances are it could have been a waste of time and effort – because no-one will recognise it.

by Jason Kendall

If Cisco training is your aspiration, but you haven’t worked with routers or switches, the chances are your first course should be a CCNA course. This will provide you with knowledge and skills to work with routers. The internet is made up of hundreds of thousands of routers, and big organisations with multiple departments and sites also rely on them to allow their networks of computers to communicate.

It’s vital that you already know a good deal about computer networks and how they operate and function, because networks are linked to routers. Without this you may encounter problems. We’d recommend you look for a course covering basic networking skills (CompTIA Network+ as an example – maybe with the A+ as well) prior to starting your CCNA. Look for a training provider that can offer this as a career package.

You’ll need a tailored course that will systematically go through everything to make sure that you have comprehensive skills and abilities before embarking on the Cisco skills.

Listening to all this talk on the area of computer technology nowadays, how can we understand what in particular to look for?

Ask a practiced advisor and they can normally tell you many awful tales of salespeople ripping-off unsuspecting students. Stick to an experienced industry advisor that asks some in-depth questions to uncover the best thing for you – not for their bank-account! It’s very important to locate a starting-point that will suit you. With a bit of live experience or qualifications, it may be that your starting point of study is not the same as someone new to the industry. Consider starting with user-skills and software training first. This can help whip your basic knowledge into shape and make the transition to higher-level learning a a little easier.

Many commercial training providers only provide office hours or extended office hours support; very few go late in the evening or at weekends. Avoid, like the plague, any organisations who use messaging services ‘out-of-hours’ – with the call-back coming in during normal office hours. It’s not a lot of help when you’ve got study issues and want support there and then.

The very best training providers utilise several support facilities across multiple time-zones. An online system provides an interactive interface to seamlessly link them all together, no matter what time you login, help is just seconds away, with no hassle or contact issues. If you accept anything less than online 24×7 support, you’ll quickly find yourself regretting it. You may avoid using the support during the night, but what about weekends, early mornings or late evenings.

We’d hazard a guess that you’re a practical sort of person – a ‘hands-on’ individual. If you’re anything like us, the unfortunate chore of reading reference guides is something you’ll force on yourself if you absolutely have to, but it’s not ideal. You should use video and multimedia based materials if books just don’t do it for you. Where possible, if we can involve all our senses in the learning process, our results will often be quite spectacular.

Locate a program where you’ll get a host of CD and DVD ROM’s – you’ll learn by watching video tutorials and demonstrations, with the facility to fine-tune your skills in fully interactive practice sessions. It’s imperative to see courseware examples from each company you’re contemplating. Be sure that they contain instructor-led video demonstrations with virtual practice-lab’s.

Many companies provide just online versions of their training packages; while you can get away with this much of the time, imagine the problems if your access to the internet is broken or you get a slow connection speed. A safer solution is the provision of DVD or CD discs that will not have these problems.

Considering how a program is ‘delivered’ to you can often be overlooked. How many parts is the training broken down into? And in what sequence and how fast does each element come? A release of your materials piece by piece, as you pass each exam is how things will normally arrive. Of course, this sounds sensible, but you might like to consider this: Students often discover that their providers typical path to completion doesn’t suit. Sometimes, a slightly different order suits them better. Could it cause problems if you don’t get everything done within their exact timetable?

For maximum flexibility and safety, it’s not unusual for students to have all their training materials (which they’ve now paid for) posted to them in one go, with nothing held back. That means it’s down to you in which order and at what speed you want to go.

Think about the following facts and pay great regard to them if you think that over-used sales technique about examination guarantees seems like a good idea:

Clearly it’s not free – you’re still coughing up for it – it’s just been included in your package price. We all want to pass first time. Entering examinations one at a time and funding them as you go sees you much better placed to get through first time – you put the effort in and are conscious of what you’ve spent.

Isn’t it in your interests to go for the best offer at the time, not to pay any mark-up to the training course provider, and to do it in a local testing office – instead of miles away at the college’s beck and call? A lot of extra profit is netted by many companies who take the exam money up-front. For quite legitimate reasons, a number of students don’t get to do their exams and so the company is quids-in. Amazingly, there are providers who rely on that fact – as that’s how they make a lot of their profit. Most companies will require you to do mock exams and with-hold subsequent exam entries from you until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass – which makes an ‘Exam Guarantee’ frankly useless.

With average prices for VUE and Pro-metric tests costing in the region of 112 pounds in this country, by far the best option is to pay for them as you take them. It’s not in the student’s interests to fork out hundreds or thousands of pounds for exams when enrolling on a course. A commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools are actually the key to your success.

Getting into your first IT role can be a little easier if you’re offered a Job Placement Assistance program. At the end of the day it’s not as difficult as you may be led to believe to land your first job – as long as you’ve got the necessary skills and qualifications; the shortage of IT personnel in Britain looks after that.

Whatever you do, don’t procrastinate and wait until you have qualified before getting your CV updated. As soon as you start studying, enter details of your study programme and get it out there! Having the possibility of an interview is far better than not even being known about. Many junior jobs are offered to people who are still at an early stage in their studies. In many cases, a specialist locally based recruitment consultancy (who will get paid commission to place you) will perform better than any division of a training company. Also of course they should know the local area and commercial needs.

Not inconsiderable numbers of men and women, it would appear, invest a great deal of time on their training course (sometimes for years), only to give up at the first hurdle when attempting to secure a good job. Promote yourself… Make an effort to get yourself known. Don’t think a job’s just going to jump out in front of you.

Being a part of the leading edge of new technology really is electrifying. You’re involved with creating a future for us all. We’re only just beginning to get to grips with how all this change will affect us. How we interact with the world will be significantly affected by technology and the web.

Wages in the IT sector aren’t to be ignored either – the average salary over this country as a whole for a typical IT employee is noticeably more than the national average. Chances are that you’ll receive quite a bit more than you would in most other jobs. As the IT industry keeps developing with no sign of a slow-down, it’s looking good that demand for well trained and qualified IT technicians will continue to boom for quite some time to come.

With hundreds of computer courses to be had, it can be difficult to find the right one. Choose one that matches up with your character and abilities, and one that is in demand in the working environment. If you’re thinking about upgrading your IT skill-set, perhaps with some Microsoft Office skills, or even becoming an IT professional, you have a choice of how to study.

By minimising their overheads, there are now companies offering up-to-the-minute courses with excellent training and assistance for much less than is asked for by old-style trainers.

Sometimes, folks don’t really get what IT is doing for all of us. It is stimulating, innovative, and puts you at the fore-front of developments in technology that will impact the whole world for generations to come. We’re at the dawn of beginning to understand how this will truly impact our way of life. How we interact with the world will be significantly affected by technology and the internet.

A usual IT man or woman in the United Kingdom is likely to earn noticeably more money than equivalent professionals in another industry. Average incomes are hard to beat nationally. It would appear there is a lot more room for IT jobs increases throughout this country. The industry is continuing to expand quickly, and as we have a significant shortage of skilled professionals, it’s highly unlikely that things will be any different for a good while yet.

How can we reach the right choice then? With all these possibilities, we’ll need to know where to search – and what it is we should be digging for.

We can see a plethora of jobs and positions available in the IT industry. Deciding which one could be right for yourself often proves challenging. How can we possibly grasp what is involved in a particular job when we’ve never done it? We normally don’t know someone who performs the role either. Reflection on these issues is imperative if you need to uncover the right solution that will work for you:

* What nature of person you reckon you are – which things you enjoy, and conversely – what makes you unhappy.

* Are you aiming to realise an important objective – for instance, working for yourself someday?

* Where is the salary on a scale of importance – is an increase your main motivator, or does job satisfaction rate further up on your priority-list?

* Many students don’t properly consider the time demanded to get fully certified.

* The time and energy you’re prepared to set aside for your training.

For the average person, getting to the bottom of these areas needs a long talk with an advisor who has direct industry experience. And we don’t just mean the qualifications – but also the commercial needs and expectations of the market as well.

A lot of training providers only give basic 9am till 6pm support (maybe a little earlier or later on certain days); very few go late in the evening or at weekends. some companies only provide email support (slow), and telephone support is usually to a call-centre who will make some notes and then email an advisor – who will then call back sometime over the next 24hrs, at a time suitable for them. This is no good if you’re stuck with a particular problem and only have certain times available in which to do your studies.

Keep looking and you’ll come across the very best companies which provide their students direct-access online support around the clock – even in the middle of the night. Unless you insist on online 24×7 support, you’ll quickly find yourself regretting it. You may avoid using the support throughout the night, but you may need weekends, late evenings or early mornings.

Most trainers typically provide a big box of books. Learning like this is dull and repetitive and not really conducive to studying effectively. If we can involve all our senses in the learning process, then the results are usually dramatically better.

Start a study-program in which you’ll get a host of CD and DVD based materials – you’ll begin by watching videos of instructors demonstrating the skills, with the facility to use virtual lab’s to practice your new skills. It’s imperative to see examples of the study materials provided by your chosen company. It’s essential they incorporate full motion videos of instructors demonstrating the topic with lab’s to practice the skills in.

It doesn’t make sense to choose training that is only available online. With highly variable reliability and quality from the ISP (internet service provider) market, it makes sense to have CD or DVD ROM based materials.

It’s quite a normal occurrence for students not to check on a painfully important area – how their company actually breaks down and delivers the courseware, and into what particular chunks. Many companies enrol you into a program spread over 1-3 years, and drop-ship the materials to you piecemeal as you complete each exam. If you think this sound logical, then consider this: What if there are reasons why you can’t finish each and every exam? And what if you find the order of the modules counter-intuitive? Due to no fault of yours, you may not meet the required timescales and not receive all the modules you’ve paid for.

Ideally, you’d get ALL the training materials right at the beginning – enabling you to have them all to return to any point – as and when you want. Variations can then be made to the order that you complete each objective if another more intuitive route presents itself.

A subtle way that colleges make a lot more is by charging for exams up-front and offering an exam guarantee. This sounds impressive, until you think it through:

It’s become essential these days that we are a bit more aware of hype – and generally we cotton on to the fact that we are actually being charged for it – it’s not because they’re so generous they want to give something away! Students who go in for their examinations when it’s appropriate, funding them as they go are much more likely to pass. They are conscious of their investment and so are more inclined to be ready for the task.

Look for the very best offer you can at the appropriate time, and avoid college mark-up fees. You’ll also be able to choose where to do your exams – meaning you can choose a local testing centre. A great deal of money is secured by some training companies that get money for exam fees in advance. A number of students don’t take them for various reasons but no refunds are given. Surprising as it sounds, there are companies around who actually rely on students not sitting all the exams – as that’s very profitable for them. Pay heed to the fact that, with the majority of Exam Guarantees – the company decides when you can do your re-takes. Subsequent exam attempts are only authorised at the company’s say so.

Shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds on an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is short-sighted – when a commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools is actually the key to your success.

It can be a nerve-racking task, but landing your first job is often eased by training colleges, through a Job Placement Assistance programme. Don’t get caught up in this feature – it isn’t unusual for training companies to overplay it. The fact of the matter is, the massive skills shortage in Britain is what will make you attractive to employers.

Bring your CV up to date as soon as possible however (advice can be sought on this via your provider). Don’t delay until you’ve qualified. Various junior support roles have been bagged by trainees who are still studying and haven’t even passed a single exam yet. At least this will get your CV into the ‘possible’ pile and not the ‘no’ pile. If it’s important to you to find work near your home, then it’s quite likely that a local (but specialised) recruitment consultancy may work much better for you than the trainer’s recruitment division, because they are much more inclined to have insider knowledge of what’s available near you.

In a nutshell, as long as you put the same commitment into landing a position as into training, you won’t have any problems. Some people curiously conscientiously work through their learning program and just give up once they’ve passed their exams and seem to expect employers to find them.

If we didn’t have a constant influx of qualified network and computer support workers, commerce in the United Kingdom (as elsewhere) would inevitably be brought to its knees. There is an ever growing requirement for technicians to support both users and the systems they work with. The nation’s requirement for better skilled and qualified individuals grows, as human beings become consistently more dependent upon computers in these modern times.

Making the most fitting career development choice is hard enough – so which sectors are important to investigate and which questions should we pose?

Make sure you don’t get caught-up, like so many people do, on the training course itself. Training for training’s sake is generally pointless; you should be geared towards the actual job at the end of it. Begin and continue with the end in mind. It’s a terrible situation, but a large percentage of students kick-off study that often sounds wonderful in the marketing materials, but which provides a job that doesn’t fulfil at all. Speak to a selection of university students for examples.

You also need to know how you feel about earning potential and career progression, and if you’re ambitious or not. You should understand what the role will demand of you, which exams they want you to have and how to develop your experience. All students are advised to talk with an experienced industry professional before following a particular study programme. This gives some measure of assurance that it contains the commercially required skills for the career path that has been chosen.

You have to be sure that all your exams are what employers want – don’t bother with programmes which end up with a useless in-house certificate or plaque. From an employer’s perspective, only the major heavyweights like Microsoft, CompTIA, Adobe or Cisco (as an example) really carry any commercial clout. Nothing else will cut the mustard.

Often, trainers provide piles of reference manuals and workbooks. This isn’t very interesting and not really conducive to remembering. Long-term memory is enhanced when we use multiple senses – learning experts have been saying this for many years.

Find a course where you’re provided with an array of CD and DVD ROM’s – you’ll begin by watching videos of instructors demonstrating the skills, and be able to hone your abilities through virtual lab’s. Don’t take any chances and look at some examples of the kind of training materials you’ll be using before you hand over your cheque. The minimum you should expect would be instructor-led video demonstrations and a variety of audio-visual and interactive sections.

Avoiding training that is delivered purely online is generally a good idea. Always choose CD or DVD based study materials where offered, as you need to be able to use them whenever it’s convenient for you – it’s not wise to be held hostage to a good broadband connection all the time.

Most training providers will only provide basic 9am till 6pm support (maybe a little earlier or later on certain days); very few go late in the evening or at weekends. Beware of institutions who use messaging services ‘out-of-hours’ – with the call-back coming in during office hours. This is no use if you’re stuck and want support there and then.

We recommend looking for training programs that utilise many support facilities active in different time-zones. All of them should be combined to offer a simple interface together with 24×7 access, when you need it, with no fuss. Never compromise where support is concerned. The majority of students who throw in the towel, would have had a different experience if they’d got the right support package in the first place.

Review the following points very carefully if you’re inclined to think the sales ploy of an ‘Exam Guarantee’ sounds great value:

They’ve allowed costings for it one way or another. One thing’s for sure – it isn’t free – they’ve simply charged more for the whole training package. Students who take each progressive exam, funding them as they go are in a much stronger position to qualify at the first attempt. They’re thoughtful of the cost and revise more thoroughly to ensure they are ready.

Isn’t it outrageous to have to pay the training company in advance for examination fees? Hold on to your money and pay for the exam when you take the exam, instead of paying any mark-up – and sit exams more locally – rather than in some remote place. Big margins are secured by many training colleges that get money for exam fees in advance. For quite legitimate reasons, a number of students don’t get to do their exams but the company keeps the money. Surprising as it sounds, providers exist who depend on students not taking their exams – and that’s how they increase their profits. Also, many exam guarantees are worthless. Most companies will not pay for you to re-take until you can prove to them you’re ready to pass.

Prometric and VUE exams are in the region of 112 pounds in Britain at the time of writing. What’s the point of paying huge ‘Exam Guarantee’ costs (often covertly rolled into the cost of the course) – when good quality study materials, the proper support and consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will really see you through.

Commercial qualifications are now, most definitely, starting to replace the older academic routes into the IT industry – but why is this happening? Vendor-based training (as it’s known in the industry) is far more specialised and product-specific. The IT sector has acknowledged that this level of specialised understanding is necessary to handle an acceleratingly technical workplace. CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA are the dominant players. Of course, a necessary portion of background detail must be taught, but essential specialised knowledge in the particular job function gives a vendor trained person a massive advantage.

If an employer is aware what work they need doing, then they simply need to advertise for the particular skill-set required. Commercial syllabuses all have to conform to the same requirements and aren’t allowed to deviate (in the way that degree courses can).

Sometimes, individuals don’t comprehend what information technology is about. It’s thrilling, changing, and puts you at the fore-front of developments in technology affecting everyones lives in the 21st century. We’ve only just begun to get a feel for how technology will influence everything we do. The internet will profoundly transform how we view and interrelate with the entire world over the years to come.

If making decent money is around the top on your scale of wants, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised to hear that the average salary of a typical IT worker is considerably more than with the rest of the economy. Demand for well trained and qualified IT technicians is certain for quite some time to come, due to the continuous expansion in the marketplace and the massive deficiency that we still have.
